ABSTRACT

Video-recording remote interviews can sometimes be necessary or desirable, such as in news broadcasting or documentary-making. However, remote interviews are not currently well-supported by digital tools. Unresolved questions about best practices and the kinds of support needed to facilitate remote interviews have become increasingly relevant since the Covid-19 pandemic. To reflect on these questions and explore the design space for systems to support high quality, remote video-recorded interviews, we conducted an exploratory Research through Design study, drawing on professional media-making techniques, novel interviewing methods and a bespoke intervention: The Interview Box. We provide a detailed summary of our design process and, reflecting on both the successes and failures of our interventions, construct two contributions: technical insights relating to the practical challenges of designing and implementing a remote video interview system, and general insights into the broader interaction design challenges of designing for remote video-recorded interviews. © 2022 Owner/Author.

ABSTRACT

The need for online meetings increased drastically during the COVID-19 pandemic. Wearing headphones for this purpose makes it difficult to know when a headphone wearing person is available or in a meeting. In this work, we explore the design possibilities of headphones as wearable public displays to show the current status or additional information of the wearer to people nearby. After two brainstorming sessions and specifying the design considerations, we conducted an online survey with 63 participants to collect opinions of potential users. Besides the preference of the colors red and green as well as using text to indicate availability, we found that only 54 % of our participants would actually wear headphones with public displays attached. The benefit of seeing the current availability status of a headphone-wearing person in an online meeting or phone call scenario were nonetheless mentioned even by participants that would not use such headphones. © 2022 ACM.

ABSTRACT

Embodied sensemaking theory is thoroughly social: we make sense of the world in interaction with others. Various designs have been proposed to scaffold gembodied social sensemaking'. Yet the details of such scaffolding need elaboration. For example, what happens in remote settings, when bodies cannot engage directly? This paper investigates, through design, how interactive artifacts scaffold embodied social sensemaking. The aim is to establish clearer links between theory and design. Twenty-four embodied interaction prototypes were created to support remote videoconferencing by design students who were also, necessarily, active videoconferencing users during a COVID-19 lockdown. A reflective ordering process revealed a design space made up of six phenomenal aspects and three basic types of scaffolding. The analysis adds further details to existing design frameworks for embodied sensemaking. The paper provides guidance to designers who aim to create meaningful and theoretically grounded embodied augmentations of remote social interaction technologies. © 2022 Owner/Author.
